Choice has unveiled artwork dedicated to positive mental health and wellbeing at its Fountain Hill estate in Antrim. Created by Bangor-based artist Chris McGuiggan of Codo Drops, the community art piece was delivered as part of Choice’s good relations initiatives and incorporates various hidden messages relating to mental health, wellbeing and community.
The design was created collaboratively, with artist Chris McGuiggan engaging with Parkhall Cultural Awareness Group to bring the artwork to life.
This community art piece is supported by the Department for Communities (DfC) and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive’s ‘Housing for All’ Shared Housing Programme. The Programme has its origins in the NI Executive Together: Building a United Community Strategy which reflects the Executive’s commitment to improving community relations and continuing the journey towards a more united and shared society. A potential investment of £2.1m will be invested in the shared housing development - Fountain Hill and its associated five-year Good Relations Plan.
Speaking at the unveiling, Mark Kent, Good Relations Officer with Choice said,
“This beautiful piece of community art was created to promote positive relationships and mental health awareness among our communities. We hope it keeps people in the surrounding area mindful of looking after their wellbeing and the wellbeing of their neighbours.
“Our good relations plan aims to increase the confidence and capacity of residents in the Fountain Hill shared housing development and neighbouring communities. Our Health and Wellbeing strategy has seen the delivery of counselling services, health events, community fridge support and ADHD training in the Antrim area which we will see expanding as we continue to implement all sections of our good relation plan within the local area.”
Choice provides a mix of supported, sheltered and general needs housing across Northern Ireland, providing over 12,000 homes across the region. Choice plays a key role in the delivery of the ‘Housing for All programme’ – creating communities through diversity and inclusivity. With seven shared housing schemes across Northern Ireland, Choice has demonstrated the impact these schemes can have for the benefits of the local communities.
Last month, Choice announced vital funding to a local Antrim counselling service, which aims to promote health and wellbeing via several community hubs that are both accessible and a safe space for all. As part of their ongoing good relations plan in the Antrim area, Choice has committed £10K towards grass roots community organisation - A Safe Space to be Me whose focus is providing accessible support in relation to mental health and emotional wellbeing in the Antrim and Crumlin areas.
