A sheltered living scheme, located in the heart of Belfast marked 40 years last week, as tenants, their families and staff at Elm Court came together to celebrate the milestone.

The scheme, which is owned and managed by Choice Housing, is located just off Donegall Pass, and provides tenants a secure living environment with a scheme co-ordinator on site and 24-hour emergency assistance. With an enviable location, tenants also have a range of amenities and shops right at their doorstep, facilitating independent living.

Elm Court is one of Choice’s longest established sheltered living schemes and in 2018 was part of a £800K refurbishment project that provided tenants with new kitchens, bathrooms, and upgraded their communal areas.

Opened in 1984 by then MP Chris Patten, the scheme comprises 48 self-contained apartments with a further nine apartments reserved for vulnerable adults of varying ages. The scheme has been a vital social housing provision for Belfast, supporting people to live safely and independently in their own home.

Michelle McAnespy, Regional Head of Tenant and Client Services at Choice Housing said,

“Elm Court has gone from strength to strength in the past forty years and at the heart of this has always been our tenants, who have embraced the communal aspect of this scheme.

“Taking part in activities, socialising and supporting each other is a consistent theme in Elm Court, and it is because of this approach that tenants have been able to overcome issues such as loneliness and isolation and many have developed close friendships.”

Situated on Elm Street in Belfast, Elm Court is convenient to local shops, restaurants, a post office, pharmacies and doctor’s surgeries in Donegall Pass, Botanic Avenue and the Dublin Road.
