40 years ago, Rothesay Court opened its doors as a sheltered living scheme, Choice have marked this milestone as a landlord celebrating the 40th anniversary and the sustainability of their housing stock.
Family and friends gathered with residents and the Choice team at Rothesay Court in Coleraine at part of this milestone event on the site of a former hospital and later a boarding house.
The scheme, which was officially opened in November 1979, has been an integral part of the local community, supporting 33 older people to live safely and independently in their own homes. Overlooking the River Bann, the scheme is within walking distance of Coleraine Town providing access to a wide range of local amenities, including the local post office and bank, as well as, a range of shops and cafes.
The schemes’ long standing tenants, Marjorie Geary and Thersea Leslie were there to celebrate the milestone with fellow residents.

“We have many more schemes across the region that are nearing this milestone but I want to pay tribute to those who have made this day possible for Rothesay. The local Choice team as well as the residents have worked hard to make this scheme a long term home that they can be proud of. Special mention also to Marjorie and Thersea who have played a key part in this over the years”.
Rothesay Court is located on Abbey Street, the name originating from an abbey that had existed close by dating back to the 10th Century. It had been raided by the Vikings as they made their way up the River Bann and was later used as a cholera hospital during a severe epidemic.
